Joseph Smith's polygamy
Joseph Smith taught that polygamy was a divine commandment and married more than 30 women in his life, some of whom had existing marriages to other men. Publicly, Smith denied that he preached or practiced polygamy until his death. He married multiple women and all secretly, even keeping most of them secret from his first wife Emma. After claiming to be threatened by an angel with a flaming sword to begin the practice, Smith revealed section 132 in the Doctrine and Covenants which spells out the rules for obtaining virgins. Even though no longer practicing on earth, the church still includes the revelation as scripture and expects or allows members to practice polygamy in heaven.
