treasure digging

Joseph Smith, church founder, was widely known as a treasure digger. He would look into a peep stone and see buried treasure and give council to others where to dig. They paid him for his Seer abilities even though they never found anything. Later he reportedly finds buried gold plates and translates them with the same stone in his hat and organizes the church. This history paints him as an experienced con artist.
