folk magic

Cunning folk traditions sometimes referred to as folk magic, were intertwined with the early culture and practice of the Latter Day Saint movement. An honest study of church history leads us to find examples of Joseph Smith and his associates' involvement in practices such as dowsing for water with divining rods and searching for buried treasure with seer stones.
