temple endowment
The temple endowment is a ceremony required for the highest level of Mormon salvation. Participants make covenants, receive secret names, learn handshakes and passwords needed to enter heaven, and until 1990 pantomimed gruesome death penalties. The ceremony's similarity to Masonic rituals, its secrecy, changes over time, and disturbing elements trouble many members. First-time attendees are often shocked and unprepared for what they experience.
