polyandry
Joseph Smith practiced polyandry, marrying at least 11 women who were already legally married to other living men. Some of these husbands were faithful church members, even sent on missions while Smith married their wives. The church's Gospel Topics Essay acknowledges this but offers no satisfactory explanation. Polyandry contradicts D&C 132's rules for plural marriage and raises serious questions about Smith's character and motives.
