116 Lost Pages

When allegedly translating the Book of Mormon, Joseph Smith had Martin Harris as a scribe. Martin convinces Joseph to let him take the first 116-page manuscript to show his wife to prove that they are hard at work. These pages get lost and rather than retranslate them, Joseph luckily moves to translate the plates of Nephi and discards the original book of Lehi. Many lose faith through this story because it seems very fishy that he 1) didn't re-translate the book of Lehi, 2) the plates conveniently have a second version of the story to be translated right at the correct time.
