Heber C. Kimball

Heber C. Kimball was one of the original Twelve Apostles and served as First Counselor in the First Presidency under Brigham Young from 1847 until his death in 1868. A native of Vermont who worked as a potter and blacksmith, Kimball converted to Mormonism in 1832 and became one of its most devoted leaders.

Kimball led the first mission to England in 1837, where he achieved remarkable success in converting thousands of people in Preston and surrounding areas. His missionary work helped establish Mormonism as an international movement.

He was an enthusiastic polygamist, marrying 45 wives—second only to Brigham Young among church leaders. His views on women and polygamy were sometimes extreme even by 19th-century Mormon standards; he famously compared choosing a wife to selecting cattle.

Kimball was known for his spiritual gifts, including prophecy and speaking in tongues. He was fiercely loyal to both Joseph Smith and Brigham Young. His son, J. Golden Kimball, became a famous church leader known for his earthy language and humor.

Kimball served in the First Presidency throughout Brigham Young’s administration and died in 1868, one of the most influential early church leaders.
