Dallin Oaks Teaches “Research Is Not The Answer”

President Oaks acknowledged that some Latter-Saint couples face conflicts over important values and priorities. Matters of Church history and doctrinal issues have led some spouses to inactivity. Some spouses wonder how to best go about researching and responding to such issues.

“I suggest that research is not the answer,” he said.

“But the best answer to any question that threatens faith is to work to increase faith in the Lord Jesus Christ,” he said. “Conversion to the Lord precedes conversion to the Church. And conversion to the Lord comes through prayer and study and service, furthered by loving patience on the part of spouse and other concerned family members.”

“When you are asked a difficult question, such as a puzzler about Church history, be honest and, if necessary, say you don’t know. But then be sure to say what you do know: ‘I know that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God.’”

If a faith will not bear to be investigated; if its preachers and professors are afraid to have it examined, their foundation must be very weak – George Albert Smith

May common sense and reason suggest that research is always the answer. When you do research though, it will come off more as church history whack-a-mole to those who do not.

What was the outcome of your research? Did you research facts or apologetics? Was it worth it? Tell your story:

  1. Truth, like light,All men and women need truth as they water and food.Truth never was indebted to a lie.I remember what Thomas Jefferson “Religions are all alike-founded fables and mythologies.” Our Lord and savior said ….Men loved darkness rather than Light.John 3:19″God is light, and in him there is no darkness at all.A liar begins with making falsehood appear like truth, and ends with making truth itself appear like falsehood. And the trust of the innocent is the liar’s most powerful tool.Yes,im upset that they LDS church lied to me,I’m upset that from now on i can’t believe them. Some things are too terrible to be true.CONSCIENCE IS THE ANOTHER NAME FOR TRUTH.REMEMBER TRUTH AND MORNING BECOME LIGHT WITH TIME.
