Hi, I'm Medusa
Business professional, wife, mother, and traveler. I was a mormon.
About me
I was a religious conservative before I found the LDS church. I wanted it to be true, believing it to be the "fullness of the gospel". I studied, I prayed, I was baptized, and I accepted the callings. I realized early on that it was all a lie, but not before getting stuck in a Temple marriage. Once the church became more involved in politics and attacked the rights of others to marry, I knew I had to get out and show my kids a better life.
# Why I left More stories of 'Why I left' the Mormon church
Before converting, I had a lot of questions and doubts. My biggest concern was the lack of equality for women. Everyone I knew in the church, including the missionaries, lied to me. They told me that women were considered equals. Even though I still had many doubts (this being foremost), I converted. My first time through the temple, I learned that women only had a relationship with God through their husband, and they had to veil their faces. They have since drastically changed the endowments, but at the time, women were still clearly inferior. Once I realized I had been lied to, my shelf broke immediately, and completely disintegrated within months. However, I went through the temple two weeks before my sealing to my husband, so I was stuck. I lived a PIMO life for over a decade, stuck in a cult I desperately wanted to escape from.

My morals aren't that different from when I was in the church, just as they weren't that different BEFORE I joined the church. I don't drink, don't smoke, I've never had drugs, no tattoos, no extra piercings, and I've never had casual sex. If I left to sin, I've done just about the worst job possible!

I feel far more "spirit" in nature, in man-made art, and in amazing food than I ever once felt sitting in a pew at church.

Mormons believe in a God who rules through absolute conformity and control. Their God cares more about a woman's sleeve length and wearing dresses to church than the member's well-being. They believe families can be separated from each other for eternity for a multitude of reasons, much outside of anyone's control. They believe in rules, regulations, and secret handshakes to get into heaven more than simply being a good person. I found nothing loving or forgiving about the Mormon God.

An enormous weight was lifted the moment I left the church. My life is my own. I make my own decisions. That 10% raise I gave myself when I stopped paying tithing has vastly improved our quality of life. I now spend Sundays out in nature instead of in a church pew.

No, and I truthfully never did. I wanted it to be true because I wanted the church to be true, but it was always a hoax.
