Biography

Rudger Clawson was an apostle from 1898 until his death in 1943, eventually serving as President of the Quorum of the Twelve. His early life included a dramatic survival of an anti-Mormon murder in the South.

In 1879, while serving a mission in Georgia, Clawson’s companion Joseph Standing was murdered by a mob. Clawson survived and his courageous conduct made him a Mormon hero. He was later imprisoned for polygamy, having three wives.

His 45-year apostolic career included significant administrative responsibilities. He served as President of the Twelve from 1921 until his death.
