Biography

Charles W. Penrose was an apostle from 1904 until his death in 1925 and served in the First Presidency. Born in London, England, he was a prolific writer, editor, and hymn composer.

Penrose authored several LDS hymns still sung today and served as editor of the Deseret News. He was among the church’s most articulate defenders and wrote extensively explaining and defending Mormon doctrine.

His English background and literary skills made him valuable for church publications and public relations during a period of intense anti-Mormon sentiment.
