Biography

Abraham Owen Woodruff was an apostle from 1897 until his death in 1904. The son of President Wilford Woodruff, he was born into the highest levels of church leadership.

Woodruff practiced polygamy with two wives, one of whom he married after the 1890 Manifesto—like other leaders who continued the practice secretly. His brief apostleship of only seven years ended when he died of smallpox while serving a mission to Mexico at age 31.

His death was a significant loss to his father’s legacy. He represents the many 19th-century apostles whose lives and service were cut short by disease.
