Biography
Jedediah M. Grant was an apostle and member of the First Presidency under Brigham Young. He is most remembered as the fiery advocate of the “Mormon Reformation” of 1856-57.
Grant preached with intense fervor during the Reformation, demanding rebaptism and repentance. His rhetoric about blood atonement—the idea that some sins required the shedding of the sinner’s blood—contributed to the tense atmosphere preceding the Mountain Meadows Massacre.
Grant practiced polygamy with seven wives. He died in 1856 at age 40, shortly before the worst excesses of the period he helped inflame. He was the grandfather of President Heber J. Grant.
