    # Why I left More stories of 'Why I left' the Mormon church

I joined at age 17 when I was shy and too afraid to say no. I gave it a shot, but I discovered lots of holes in Joseph Smith's story and left to go back to my original Christian beliefs.

I lived in Washington state in the greater Seattle area. In high school when I was 17, I became acquainted with some Mormons. Naturally, they invited me to church. I tried to like it, but never really got into the church. Something seemed off and not fulfilling at the Mormon church and by age 19, I was done. No one could adequately answer questions about whether architecture "proved" the Book of Mormon to be true.

A nice woman I knew got me in touch with some ex-Mormons who had become Christians. These people directed me to resources about ex-Mormons and reasons they ended up leaving the church. I ordered as many books, tapes, and leaflets as I could (this was in the 1980s, before the internet) and soon knew why I no longer believed in the church.

I decided to leave, typed out a letter stating that I had renounced my belief in the church, was now a Christian, and asked that they remove my name from their rolls. I sent it certified, which required a signature to assure it was received and dropped it in the mail!

Fast forward to today, and we all know Joseph Smith is a proven liar and charlatan - same with Brigham Young and the rest. I had to chuckle when the Joseph Smith Papyri were translated and found to be Egyptian funerary papyrus fragments from ancient Thebes, along with four mummies. The BOM has been disproven as just a tall tale with no DNA matches between Native Americans and Middle Eastern Jews. How could God be so wrong? Well, God isn't wrong - Joseph Smith was dishonest, stole other men's wives, and worse!

Also, the racism regarding "white and delightsome" skin being a blessing and dark skin being a curse always bothered me deeply. No explanation was satisfactory to me, and wasn't it amazing how God suddenly changed his mind and let black men hold the priesthood in 1978? The Mormon god changed his mind many times: women can now show their knees, secret underwear doesn't have to be worn anymore, and divorce is okay!

I saw to it that my kids knew what happened to me and instilled in them the necessity of checking things out before signing on to anything! And I'm happy to report they're all doing well!
