Biography
Don Carlos Smith was the youngest brother of Joseph Smith and a prominent figure in early church publishing. Baptized on June 9, 1830, at age 14, he quickly became active in church affairs despite his youth.
In 1839, Don Carlos became the first editor of the ‘Times and Seasons,’ the primary Latter-day Saint newspaper in Nauvoo. He edited 31 issues until his death, shaping the church’s public voice during a critical period. He also worked on publishing editions of the Book of Mormon and the Doctrine and Covenants.
Beyond publishing, Don Carlos served missionary trips as a teenager, was chosen as the first President of the High Priests Quorum in January 1836, served on the Nauvoo City Council, and held leadership in the Nauvoo Legion. He contributed physically to building the Kirtland Temple.
Don Carlos died of pneumonia on August 7, 1841, at just 25 years old, leaving behind his wife Agnes and their children. Joseph Smith was devastated by the loss of his youngest brother.
