Biography
Sidney Rigdon was a counselor in the First Presidency under Joseph Smith and one of the most influential early Mormon leaders. A former Campbellite preacher, Rigdon converted in 1830 and brought intellectual respectability to the young church.
Rigdon contributed significantly to early Mormon theology and was involved in many revelations and the translation of the Bible. His oratorical skills made him a key spokesman for the church.
After Joseph Smith’s death, Rigdon claimed succession rights but lost to Brigham Young. He was excommunicated in 1844 and founded his own church, which quickly failed. His case illustrates the fractured succession after Joseph Smith’s martyrdom.
