Biography
Joseph B. Wirthlin was an apostle from 1986 until his death in 2008, serving for 22 years. The grandson of a presiding bishop, Wirthlin had a successful business career before his church calling.
Wirthlin was known for his warm, gentle speaking style and his messages about Sunday observance, gratitude, and the importance of family. His final general conference talk, given while visibly frail, moved many members.
He played college football at the University of Utah and maintained an interest in athletics throughout his life. His talks often included sports metaphors and stories of perseverance.
