Biography
Sophronia Smith McCleary was the eldest daughter of Joseph Smith Sr. and Lucy Mack Smith, and an elder sister of Joseph Smith the Prophet. She was present during many of the foundational events of the early Latter Day Saint movement.
She married Calvin W. Stoddard on December 2, 1827, in Palmyra, New York, and they had two daughters, though one died in infancy. After Calvin died in 1836, she remarried William McCleary on February 11, 1838, in Kirtland, Ohio.
Sophronia moved with the Saints to Kirtland, then to Far West, Missouri, and finally to Nauvoo, Illinois. She received her endowment in the Nauvoo Temple in late 1845. Unlike many of her siblings, she did not journey west with Brigham Young’s followers after Joseph’s death, instead remaining in Illinois.
She died on October 28, 1876, in Colchester, McDonough County, Illinois.
